Do You Need A Sleep Mask?
Only movie stars and old people wear sleep masks right?
I mean, why do you want a mask on you face while you sleep?
Well, this is why...
You want to sleep in the dark - complete darkness. Sure you turned off the lights - but there's still that glow from the street lights, clock radio, cell phone, TV and whatever other electrical device you feel needs to be in the bedroom with you. (Um, maybe it's time to purge your inner sanctuary...) Anyway, according to the National Sleep Foundation, "a dark bedroom contributes to a better sleep."
But why is this?
The brain needs to sense pure darkness in order to start the production of melatonin, the sleep chemical. This greatly increases your chances of falling asleep. You want quality sleep to keep your immune system at attention and lack of sleep can actually pack on the pounds.
But sleep masks are uncomfortable.
Not no more! Gone are the days of a smashed nose & flattened eyes thanks to that flat silk bondage device. Now, you can get a mask with little nose piece and raised contoured eye sockets so
you don't even have to feel like you're wearing a mask!
I currently use the sleep mask by Drift To Sleep. OK, I was partly drawn to the purple color, but it's much more comfortable and better at keeping out the light than the sleep masks of the dark ages.
Give it a try and see if you can improve your sleep - after all it's about quality, not quantity.
To sleep, perchance to wake up refreshed...

Event: March Against Monsanto CLE 2016
It's time again for us to march... against Monsanto!
This peaceful, community event brings together Clevelanders from all walks of life as we stand together to let the world know it's time for Monsanto's damaging presence to come to and end.
March Against Monsanto CLE features a variety of speakers who give their stories about how Monsanto, and the widespread use of GMOs and harmful pesticides/herbicides, is damaging to our health, the environment and the world at large.
After our speakers have finished, we will all march around the block in Ohio City and let our voices be heard! So bring out your best signs, and help to let the world know that it's time to take our food back!

Personal Crudités
Ignore the onions, they were for another project. |
The solution...my own personal crudités...
As I am not a fan of the processing of baby carrots (treated with chlorine), I start with one bunch of organic carrots with the greens still intact (I hear they taste better that way). I cut those into smaller pieces and leave the skins on. Next, I chop two orange bell peppers. I typically cook with red peppers, but found that the orange were sweeter and juicer when consumed raw. Lastly, I quarter baby cucumbers - you may know them as pickling cukes.
I may be obsessed with nut milk... |
All these veggies are divided up into five sandwich bags, so I can easily stash them in my lunch bag as I'm dashing off to work. I found storing the pre-made bags in a meatloaf dish helps to keep the fridge tidy.
Add a scoop or two of oil-free hummus and you have yourself one tasty mid-afternoon snack!
Keep it healthy!
